As the holidays are upon us Hawkeye Security and Electronics encourages everyone to practice fire safety. Here are some tips on how you can keep your loved ones and your home fire protected this holiday season.  Practice fire safety!

Sources of Heat

Space heaters, fireplaces and candles don’t mix well with Christmas trees and decorations. Keep all sources of heat away from flammable items and materials. Giving ample breathing room (3 feet is recommended) will keep anything flammable out of harm’s way. Be sure to turn off any portable heaters before going to sleep.

Christmas Lights

Make sure your Christmas lights don’t overheat when lit.  Look for a safety tested label so you know you are buying quality products. Also always turn your tree lights off before going to bed.

Have a Plan

Family_ChecklistIf you don’t already have one, create a fire escape plan and practice it with your family. Follow Your Escape Plan!

Remember to GET OUT, STAY OUT and CALL 9-1-1 or your local emergency phone number. Here is a checklist from the Red Cross.
❏ If closed doors or handles are warm, use
your second way out. Never open doors
that are warm to the touch.
❏ Crawl low under smoke.
❏ Go to your outside meeting place and then
call for help.
❏ If smoke, heat or flames block your exit
routes, stay in the room with doors closed.
Place a wet towel under the door and call
the fire department or 911. Open a
window and wave a brightly colored cloth
or flashlight to signal for help.
