Do you know what a bioswale is?

Shakes Run neighborhood, home to this year’s 46th Annual Homearama July 12-27, is pioneering practices for sustainable development techniques, paving the way for the future of land development. Homearama 2014 is being developed on banks of Shakes Run Creek and is utilizing the existing flow of the land to treat the vast majority of storm water drainage naturally.

This project will utilize “bioswales,” which work to channel, capture and treat oil, salt and sediments in the storm water. These bioswales use natural rock, soil, sage grasses, and a mix of shrubs and trees to enhance the natural feel of the project. Check out the progress below.
