How to Keep Your Home Safe for the Holidays

How to Keep Your Home Safe for the Holidays

There is so much to look forward to during the holiday season; holiday parties, shopping, travel, decorations. It is important during all of this fun, to keep your family and your home safe. Unfortunately, during the holiday season many thieves take advantage of the easy access to packages and empty homes. Here are some ways to keep your home and your family safe during the holiday season.

  1. Try to hide deliveries and packages: Nowadays, many people do most, if not all, of their Christmas shopping online, which means receiving deliveries and packages at home. This is an easy way for thieves to steal the merchandise that you have ordered. The best way to protect yourself from this type of theft is to have your delivery person put your packages in a more discreet location than the front porch. Also, try to schedule deliveries during times when you will be home, if possible, or when they won’t be sitting out for too long.
  2. Don’t Post About Your Travel Plans: Many families travel during the holiday season to visit family and friends. When you do this, it is advised to keep your plans offline, so that people do not know when you will be gone, or where you are going.
  3. Make it Look Like You Are Home, Even When You Are Away: When a house is empty, thieves have plenty of time to try and break in to steal items from your home. While you are away on a holiday trip, set your lighting system so that your porch lights, etc. still turn on and off at normal times. Home automation and motion-sensor lights can help with this. Additionally, ask a neighbor or friend to pick up mail and packages each day so that they do not stack up. If mail is left to stack up, this is an easy way for thieves to know if someone is out of town.
  4. Have a Monitored Security System: The best way to ensure that your home is safe while you are home or away is to have a home security system.
